The view of the Owens Valley was breathtaking as we traveled 24 miles from the town of Lone Pine into the Inyo National Forest. When we finally arrived at Horseshoe Meadows I was anxious to greet the backpackers who were getting ready to trek into the Golden Trout and John Muir wilderness areas and Sequoia National Park, but I moved slower than usual at 10,000 feet. Mom and I found this spot in June 1996 when we tried to meet Walkin'
Jim Stoltz at Trail Pass which is a short hike from Horseshoe
Meadows. He was on his Pacific
Crest Trail Fundraising Trek and we had a website online for him.
We missed Walkin' Jim because of a hail storm, but we decided this
was a good location for an annual hiking trip. |
Since dogs aren't allowed in some backcountry areas, we settled for a day hike on Cottonwood Pass Trail which took us around the meadow. |

| Dad carried me in a pack most of the time because
he didn't want me to disturb the critters,
but I got out for a few Kodak moments; like walking across the log over a rushing creek. |
